ChatGPT answers can now be a game or a budget calculator
Ask ChatGPT to help you plan a monthly budget, and the answer may arrive as a working calculator you can type numbers into, inside the chat itself. OpenAI announced the feature, called Intelligent UI, in a post on X, and it ships with GPT-6 to every ChatGPT tier.
At a glance
- GPT-6 is reaching the Chat tab on all ChatGPT plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get it globally today, and Free and Go users start getting it tomorrow.
- For each answer, the model decides how to combine text, charts, graphics, tappable buttons, forms and small interactive tools, and your question is what it uses to pick the mix.
- Paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol and the Free and Go tiers on GPT-6 Luna. The models behind the Work tab and Codex are not changing in this release.
If you have not been following, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are not new models. They came out on September 22, 2026 as faster, lower-cost GPT-6 models. They were trained with methods similar to GPT-6 Astra's and improved on factuality, coding, computer use and alignment. According to Wikipedia, Astra was unveiled on September 3, 2026 and reached paid users the next day in a restricted version that rejects certain prompts in areas such as cybersecurity.
Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 answer with charts, buttons and forms
OpenAI describes Intelligent UI as fast, interactive answers that make everyday questions more visual and complex topics easier to grasp. GPT-6 builds each response out of text, visuals and interactive elements, and it chooses how those pieces fit together based on your question.
OpenAI lists the building blocks as graphics and charts that help explain an idea, plus tappable buttons, forms and interactive experiences you use directly in the conversation. The examples are concrete: a game, or an interactive budget planning calculator, built on the spot and used without leaving the chat.
The rest of the announcement is about what you do with these answers. You can explore ideas through visuals that respond as you learn and try things, deepen your understanding of a topic with visuals that bring concepts to life, and play with interactive answers to customize the response you get.
Paid users get GPT-6 Sol today, and Free and Go users get Luna from tomorrow
The rollout goes plan by plan. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 with Intelligent UI globally today, and the expansion to Free and Go users starts tomorrow. The model also depends on the plan: GPT-6 Sol powers the paid tiers and GPT-6 Luna powers Free and Go. OpenAI says both are tuned for everyday conversation.
The scope is narrow. The update applies only to the Chat tab, and the models powering Work and Codex do not change. Sol and Luna have been in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users since September 22, and in the API as gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna. Codex regulars get to watch this launch from the next tab over.
On how the two models compare, ScriptByAI's timeline, as of its October 6, 2026 update, lists Luna as the fastest and least expensive GPT-6 model and Astra as the most capable. According to AI Intel Report, API prices for Sol and Luna were 50 percent lower than GPT-5.6 promotional rates, which the outlet attributes to improvements in caching and inference.
How does GPT-6 decide what an answer looks like?
OpenAI's answer is that the model chooses. GPT-6 reads the question and assembles the reply from text, visuals and interactive pieces in whatever combination it judges fits best. A good tutor works the same way, switching between explaining out loud, sketching on a whiteboard and handing you a worksheet, depending on where you are stuck.
The approach has precedents. According to LLM Releases, GPT-6 Astra already emphasized finished professional artifacts, such as documents, slides, spreadsheets and websites through Sites in ChatGPT, and decides when to ask clarifying questions and when to proceed on assumptions. ScriptByAI reports that the Data agent in ChatGPT Work, launched September 10, 2026, connects approved company data to analysis and interactive dashboards.
What the announcement leaves out is how any of this behaves in daily use. OpenAI does not say how often GPT-6 picks an interactive answer over plain text, whether you can turn the feature off, or whether Luna on Free and Go builds the same tools Sol does. In our view, shipping one feature name on two different models without a single comparison between them is the weakest part of the announcement.
When Luna reaches free accounts. The next checkpoint is tomorrow, when Free and Go users start getting GPT-6 with Intelligent UI on Luna. OpenAI says only that the expansion starts then and gives no date for when it will reach every free account. It also has not said whether Intelligent UI will come to the Work tab or Codex, which keep their current models for now.
