ChatGPT ads cross into 31 European countries
Promtime
openaiOpenAI plans to switch on its ChatGPT advertising platform in 31 European countries next week, bringing sponsored placements to Free and Go users across the region. The plan was posted on Threads, which also says advertisers are expected to gain access to the Ads platform.
At a glance
- The format runs as a standalone widget placed below the model's answer, a separate block in the interface rather than sponsored wording folded into the generated response text.
- Advertisers in the 31 markets are expected to receive access to the Ads platform itself, so buying and serving arrive together rather than the placements appearing ahead of local demand.
- Only the Free and Go plans carry the format; every paid tier above Go stays clear of it, which keeps advertising confined to the cheapest end of OpenAI's consumer lineup.
Europe is one of the largest consumer markets for any American software product, and the move reads as OpenAI testing whether an ad-funded tier scales beyond a single-country pilot. The tier split matters as much as the geography, since advertising sits on the plans with the most users and the least revenue per head. That likely makes the economics of the free tier, rather than the subscription business, the problem the format is built to address.
The consumer format reached the Free and Go plans this month, and the European switch-on follows next week across 31 countries. According to Digiday, that lands at the six month mark for OpenAI's advertising business, which started as a United States pilot in February.
The format is served only to Free and Go accounts, and it takes the shape of a standalone widget under the answer. Paid plans above Go carry no advertising, so the European expansion changes nothing for subscribers on the higher tiers.
Advertisers are also expected to gain access to the Ads platform, the buying side of the system, alongside the user-facing launch. That puts campaign setup and ad delivery in the region on the same schedule as the appearance of the widgets in ChatGPT.
When the 31 markets switch on
The timing is given only as next week, with no day named and no published breakdown of which European countries are included. Pricing for advertisers, the number of formats beyond the below-answer widget, and any local rules OpenAI applies to the placements are not described. The six month framing for the ads business comes from Digiday rather than from OpenAI.
