AI auditors get a state registry in California
Third-party auditors who check AI models against state law will have to be registered in California, under two bills Governor Gavin Newsom signed with backing from Anthropic and OpenAI. Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan’s bill creates that registry plus ethical rules for those auditors.
The second bill, from state Sen. Jerry McNerney, tasks the state with setting criteria for “Independent Verification Organizations” and vetting their expertise on AI risks. McNerney said the signing “sends a clear message that California is taking the lead on assessing AI’s safety risks.”
OpenAI’s Chris Lehane said the company will keep up momentum in state legislatures until Congress acts, and endorsed SB 1119, a kids’ chatbot safety bill Sam Altman called Newsom about with last-minute concerns.
