Claude Code subagent status updates cost about 99% less
Background subagents in Claude Code use less of your usage limit after Haiku 5.5 took over the status line they refresh every 30 seconds. The about 99% cut applies to each update, while whole sessions used about 5% less of the limit, or about 6% more prompts. If you run background subagents, update to v2.1.316+.
Each update used to re-read the subagent’s whole conversation, and Haiku 5.5 writes it from short notes instead. The subagent itself keeps its own model. The change is live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and for everyone on Team and Enterprise.
