Ads arrive on ChatGPT Free and Go plans this month
Promtime
openaiOpenAI is adding advertising to ChatGPT and updating its Privacy Policy around it, with ads set to appear on the Free and Go plans beginning later this month. The change was announced in an email to users, posted to Ycombinator, that sets out how ads are selected and what advertisers receive.
At a glance
- Initial ad selection runs on the current topic of a ChatGPT conversation plus limited contextual signals such as general location and device type, with past chats and memories excluded.
- Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education subscriptions carry no advertising, and OpenAI says ad-free options remain available for those who do not want ads in the assistant.
- Advertisers receive only overall performance data such as total views or clicks, and OpenAI states they have no access to chats, chat history, memories or personal details.
Why it matters Advertising has been absent from the ChatGPT interface since launch, and its arrival on the free tier changes the economics of a general-purpose assistant. The staged design, contextual first and personalized only after an explicit prompt, reads as an attempt to fit the shift inside existing privacy commitments rather than reopen them. The line that counts in practice is the one between conversation content used to pick an ad and conversation content passed outward, which OpenAI places at the advertiser boundary.
Personalization is framed as a later step. OpenAI says it will first ask users to choose whether they want more relevant and personalized ads, and that opting in would draw on information that stays only within ChatGPT, such as ads a user has interacted with or context from chats, with the control available in settings.
For ads shown in ChatGPT, OpenAI says it uses information about ads a user views or interacts with to measure and improve their effectiveness. Ads are always clearly labeled and visually separated from ChatGPT responses, and the company states that they do not influence the answers the assistant produces.
The Privacy Policy update covers how ads work and how the experience can be controlled. OpenAI also restates that personal details and conversations with ChatGPT remain private and are not shared with advertisers, a point the email lists under what is not changing.
What's next The notice gives no specific start date beyond later this month, and it does not describe ad formats, placement in the interface, or the countries covered. The personalization prompt is the next visible step, with no timing attached to it. Until it appears, selection stays contextual, and the plans listed as ad-free remain outside the rollout.
