One quarter brought Anthropic $16.8B and, it says, a profit

According to the Financial Times, Anthropic brought in $16.8 billion in the third quarter and says it made a profit. In 2025, according to the prospectus Reuters saw, the same company booked a net loss of $42 billion. The headlines do not say which kind of profit Anthropic means.
At a glance
- Bloomberg and the FT both put Anthropic's third-quarter revenue at $16.8 billion. That one quarter is more than three times the nearly $4.6 billion the company booked in all of 2025.
- About $34 billion of the $42 billion 2025 net loss was an accounting charge tied to financing that could later turn into stock. That money was never spent on running the business.
- Neither paywalled headline says which profit measure Anthropic uses, and the company carries $518 billion in cloud, compute and infrastructure commitments, about 80% of them non-cancellable.
Anthropic's run-rate revenue, meaning the current pace of sales projected over a full year, climbed fast in 2026. According to Unite.AI, it was about $9 billion at the end of 2025 and $14 billion on Feb 12, 2026. It passed $30 billion on April 6, 2026 and $47 billion in May 2026. Unite.AI also reports two funding rounds: a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion valuation on Feb 12 and a $65 billion Series H at $965 billion on May 28.
One quarter at $16.8 billion against $4.6 billion for all of 2025
Bloomberg reports the same $16.8 billion figure and calls it the quarter before Anthropic's IPO. Both stories sit behind paywalls. What the public can see is the revenue figure and the profit claim, not the tables underneath.
The second quarter gives a reference point. According to The Decoder, the FT earlier reported second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion and said Anthropic was on track for its second straight quarter of operating profit, "though only on an adjusted basis". The prospectus Reuters saw put revenue for the whole of 2025 at nearly $4.6 billion. The third quarter alone is more than three times that amount.
About $34 billion of the $42 billion 2025 loss was an accounting charge
Wasn't Anthropic deep in the red a year ago? On paper it was, but most of that loss was not cash. About $34 billion of the roughly $42 billion 2025 net loss was an accounting charge. It reflected a higher estimated value for financing that could later convert into stock.
Think of owing a friend a share of a house that has just been valued higher: your debt grows on paper, but no money leaves your bank account. The cash side of 2025 is a separate set of numbers. The operating loss grew to $8.06 billion from $2.98 billion in 2024, on total operating expenses of $12.65 billion.
Compute and infrastructure made up $7.33 billion of those expenses, roughly triple the 2024 level. Because of the accounting charge, the 2025 net loss and a later profit claim cannot be compared directly.
Anthropic has committed $518 billion to cloud, compute and infrastructure
Anthropic has committed $518 billion to cloud, compute and infrastructure, and about 80% of that cannot be cancelled. Google is owed at least $111.1 billion, Amazon $110 billion and Microsoft $31.4 billion. About $161.2 billion is lease obligations for Broadcom-related equipment. The filing is blunt about the Google terms:
If our actual spend falls short, we must pay Google the difference.
It works like a phone plan with a minimum monthly charge: use less and you pay the full amount anyway. According to Unite.AI, an expanded Amazon agreement on April 20 covered up to 5 GW of capacity and more than $100 billion committed to AWS technologies over ten years. InvestmentNews reports that Anthropic expects demand for advanced AI to be "limited principally by the availability of compute". That is its reason for spending ahead of revenue.
The IPO could value Anthropic at more than $2 trillion
A valuation above $2 trillion compares with $965 billion in May and about $1.8 trillion for SpaceX at its June IPO. The listing is likely to come after the November US midterms. OpenAI reportedly filed confidentially for its own IPO in June.
Anthropic's S-1, the registration statement a company files before listing, is not public on SEC EDGAR. Anthropic reportedly filed confidentially on 1 June 2026, so every figure so far comes second-hand from press reports of the draft. The Decoder says the S-1 went to a small group of partners. According to Unite.AI, Reuters reported on the draft on September 28, 2026.
What the headlines leave out is the definition of profit. The FT's second-quarter wording, as The Decoder relays it, suggests an adjusted operating figure that likely leaves out items such as the 2025 accounting charge. In our view, an unnamed profit measure says little about a company with $518 billion in mostly fixed commitments, where two customers supplied nearly a quarter of 2025 revenue and many large customers have no long-term contracts.
When the S-1 goes public. No date has been given for a public filing. Until the prospectus appears on EDGAR, nobody outside the company can check which measure is behind "profitable". Reporting points to a listing after the November US midterms, which is the earliest likely checkpoint. That document should show whether the third-quarter profit holds up without adjustments, and how much of the $518 billion falls due in the next few years.
