As of August 2026 the identical models bill wildly differently depending on how you access them. In a June 2026 SemiAnalysis test, usage that fit inside a $200 Max 20x plan would have run about $8,000 at API list prices, a 40x gap. Other measurements land in the 12-21x range.

"I accidentally spent $4,000 in 3 days in Claude Code," Pylon CEO Marty Kausas said. Uber rolled out Claude Code in December 2025 and burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget by April. The Information reports that some companies have seen their bills grow 2-3x.

One day-long session logged by the analysis author would have cost $180.91 at API rates, and 82% of that came from cache: the agent rereads the full context at every step. Heavy users are capping spend per engineer. Uber's ceiling is $1,500 per month per tool, per Bloomberg, while Workday and Stripe sit around $2,000, by SemiAnalysis's estimate.
