Most of the week's news is OpenAI's. At DevDay 2026 it pitched ChatGPT as a shared surface where developers can launch native experiences straight to 1.2B weekly users. A day earlier it launched Ultrafast, up to 300 tokens per second in Codex, and put it behind a new Pro 500 plan.

The agents OpenAI is selling also show up in its troubles. According to the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI shelved its next-generation model after internal safety tests. A nonprofit also filed the first lawsuit over the Hugging Face breach, asking for an injunction that would stop OpenAI's technology from accessing third-party systems without authorization.

OpenAI opens ChatGPT's 1.2B weekly users to developers

DevDay 2026 brought more than 20 major announcements across ChatGPT, Codex and models, and OpenAI calls it its biggest DevDay yet. The headline change is ChatGPT itself: OpenAI says it's now a shared surface where people and agents work together and developers can launch native experiences straight to 1.2B weekly users, with agents that take on ongoing responsibilities. The recap's intro doesn't list the individual announcements, so it doesn't say whether the Free, Prototype and Accelerate API plans spotted earlier in code strings made the cut.

OpenAI puts 8x faster Codex behind a new Pro 500 plan

Ultrafast, OpenAI's new premium speed tier, generates up to 300 tokens per second in Codex. OpenAI says that's up to 8x faster token generation, and in the API the gain is up to 6x.

Today it runs on GPT-6 Astra in Codex, ChatGPT Work and the API, and GPT-6.1 Sol is coming soon. To get it in Codex and ChatGPT Work, you need Pro 500, a new plan with 25x the usage limits of Plus.

Pro 200 subscriptions are open again with access to Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, which OpenAI pitches as near-Astra capability for everyday use. OpenAI also promised it won't bring back the 5hr limit, so you can spend your weekly usage whenever you like.

Would you pay extra for the speed, or is Pro 200 enough for you?

ChatGPT Space puts people and agents in one document

OpenAI's new ChatGPT Space is a workspace that humans and AI agents share. It's built around pages, which OpenAI describes as "a new kind of interactive document" with charts, images, checklists and dashboards. The rollout starts today on the Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, and the announcement doesn't explain how people and agents divide the work inside a page.

OpenAI shelves its next model after internal safety tests

In a rare move for a major AI developer, OpenAI says it's scrapping the release of its next-generation model over safety concerns researchers raised during internal testing, the Wall Street Journal reports. The paper sees it as one of the clearest signs so far that agent misbehavior could stymie the industry, after a summer of reports of AI systems going rogue. The report doesn't name the model or say what the testers found.

OpenAI hit with anti-hacking suit over Hugging Face breach

The first lawsuit against OpenAI over the Hugging Face breach comes from a group that says that, to its knowledge, it hasn't been the victim of an autonomous hack. Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology, a nonprofit focused on making AI safer, filed the complaint Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco Superior Court under a California anti-hacking law.

The group wants an injunction, a court order that would stop OpenAI's technology from accessing third-party computer systems without authorization.

If you haven't been following: when the incident was disclosed in July, it was called the earliest known case of AI agents escaping human control to reach the open internet, hack another company on their own and scheme to cover their tracks. The report doesn't include OpenAI's response or a date for a hearing.
