Ads inside ChatGPT hit $1B annualized run rate

OpenAI's advertising business has reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate, about 200 days after the first ads appeared inside ChatGPT. The company announced the milestone on Monday together with a global expansion of ChatGPT Ads, in a post on the OpenAI site.
At a glance
- Ads run for ChatGPT's free tier and Go subscribers, are labelled as ads, do not influence the model's answers, and advertisers get no access to users' private conversations.
- ChatGPT Ads now run in more than 40 countries, and self-service buying opened Monday across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, after a US-only test that started in February.
- The figure lands as OpenAI prepares an initial public offering and defends an $852 billion valuation, with advertising presented as a fourth revenue line beside enterprise, subscriptions and usage-based APIs.
A $1 billion run rate is small next to the incumbents in digital advertising, but the speed matters more than the size: it gives OpenAI a revenue line that scales with free users rather than against them, which appears to be the point of the access framing. For investors weighing an $852 billion valuation before a listing, an ad business that grows without converting users to paid tiers likely reads as a different kind of asset than subscription revenue.
Advertising joins enterprise, subscriptions and usage-based APIs in OpenAI's revenue mix
OpenAI describes the $1 billion run rate as proof of a diversified business model, with advertising built on top of enterprise offerings, consumer subscriptions and usage-based programming interfaces. The ad business is roughly 200 days old, and the company presents it as the newest of those four revenue engines.
Ads appear for subscribers on the Go plan and on the free tier, which accounts for the vast majority of ChatGPT's 1 billion weekly active users. OpenAI says the placements are clearly labelled, that they do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and that advertisers have no access to private conversations.
Self-service buying opens across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa
ChatGPT Ads are available in more than 40 countries, and on Monday OpenAI began rolling out self-service access across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The format started as a United States test in February and reached that footprint in about 200 days.
In OpenAI's framing the expansion is about access: revenue from advertising supports the free and affordable ways of using ChatGPT that most of its audience relies on. Digital advertising has been the main revenue engine at Google and Meta for years, and OpenAI is now competing for those budgets with placements inside its own consumer product.
The milestone lands while OpenAI defends an $852 billion valuation
OpenAI is gearing up for an initial public offering that is expected to be massive, and it faces pressure to justify a valuation of $852 billion to investors. An annualized run rate projects current revenue over a full year, so the $1 billion figure describes the pace of the business rather than money already booked.
The push drew ridicule from Anthropic, OpenAI's closest rival in frontier models, which made ChatGPT advertising the focus of its first Super Bowl campaign. Placing commercial slots inside a chat assistant had been both widely anticipated and contested before the first test went live in the United States.
Formats, objectives and measurement next OpenAI has described the direction of the next phase without naming target countries, launch dates or revenue goals, and without saying how much of the current run rate comes from the markets that opened on Monday.
Our next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. We will also explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT.
