Each ChatGPT Pro tier now comes with monthly API credits

ChatGPT Pro now comes with monthly API credit equal to the plan’s price: $100, $200 or $500 per billing period, depending on the tier. The terms are on OpenAI’s help center page for the benefit, last updated October 28. Unused credit expires when the billing cycle ends, and the credit pays only for API Platform usage. Codex run through an API key is not covered, and the credit does not raise ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits.
Business workspaces get $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 per monthly billing period. Workspaces billed annually upfront receive the whole year’s grant at once, capped at $6,000, and it expires when that annual cycle ends. On every plan the first grant is prorated for the time left in the current period, so the amount ChatGPT billing shows before you confirm can be lower than the full allowance.
Who can claim it
The offer covers Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats. Plus and free trials don’t qualify, and Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not eligible plans. The paid subscription has to have been active for at least seven days, and availability also depends on the enabled cohort and country.
Each subscription or workspace links to one API organization, and an organization can hold only one such link. On Business, the person activating must own both the ChatGPT workspace and the receiving API organization: “Workspace membership or an admin role alone is not enough.”
What it pays for
The credit covers Responses and Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images and built-in tools billed to the linked organization. It is spent before any purchased API credit, and once it runs out with nothing else in the balance, requests fail with HTTP 429 and credit_balance_exhausted. Cancelling leaves credit already issued usable until the cycle ends. An approved full refund removes it.
Pro $200 subscribers see ChatGPT Work and Codex usage fall from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance on October 30, a cut announced in September, and the new credit does not offset it on that side.
Our analysis
What we checked
On October 29 we read OpenAI’s help page in full and set its amounts against seat prices on OpenAI’s pricing page and per-token rates in its API docs. We also compared the terms with Anthropic’s support article on Claude credits.
Every figure in the announcement matches the page. Per dollar of subscription, Pro returns the most, and Business returns less on monthly billing and once a team passes the pool cap.
- A Business seat billed monthly returns 80% of its price ($20 on a $25 Standard seat, $100 on a $125 Premium seat), and 100% when billed annually. The $500 cap is hit at 25 Standard or 5 Premium seats, so ten Premium seats on monthly billing get back only 40%.
- At Standard-tier list prices, assuming three input tokens per output token with no caching or tools, $100 buys about 5M tokens on gpt-6-astra, 25M on gpt-6.1-sol and 500M on gpt-6-luna.
- Anthropic’s terms match on the $100 and $200 tiers, the $20 and $100 seats, the $500 pool, the seven-day wait and no rollover. Anthropic, though, pays annual plans monthly and excludes interactive Claude Code, where OpenAI excludes Codex via API keys.
