OpenAI doubles Pro and Business Premium usage limits

OpenAI is doubling usage limits on its Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers and on Business Premium, effective October 29, Thibault Sottiaux wrote in a post on Twitter. If you pay for Pro 200, the reduction set for October 30 won’t happen, and your Work and Codex usage stays where it is.

That reduction would have taken included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance, at an unchanged $200 a month. OpenAI’s stated reason at the time was its increasingly efficient models. Anyone with an active Pro $200 subscription at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29 was grandfathered only through October 29, so the reversal arrived on the last day of the old allowance.

For Pro 200, the doubling and the cancelled halving appear to be the same move: Sottiaux says Work and Codex usage will stay the same, not that it will grow. Those two draw on one pool. Codex has no subscription of its own, and every plan shares a single allowance between Codex and ChatGPT Work, Developers Digest says. Of the other tiers, only Pro 100 has a multiple from OpenAI itself: five times Plus, from its launch announcement.

Dots, OpenAI’s always-on agents, keep their extended limits “for now”, and a Dot’s usage stays separate from your default allowance. A Codex task that a Dot opens draws usage as usual, so on the tiers in today’s post that work comes out of the allowance that just doubled.

Subscribers posted emails showing that the Pro 200 reduction came with a one-time grant of 62,500 credits, expiring December 31, Standard Compute reported. It is unclear whether that grant still applies now that the reduction is off.

Sottiaux also said OpenAI will “keep shipping better models and other efficiency improvements that increase your effective usage over time.”
