Anthropic folds Cowork into Claude chat and adds Slides

Ask Claude for a slide deck and you stay in the same window. Claude Cowork has stopped being a separate destination: Anthropic has merged it into Claude chat, a move flagged on Threads, and the rollout started on September 16, 2026.

If you missed the earlier episodes: Cowork came out of an internal observation, according to DEV Community, that non-technical teams at Anthropic were bypassing Chat for Claude Code, because Code could do real multi-step work. Cowork was that capability with the terminal filed off. Axios reports that OpenAI has already merged Codex and ChatGPT into one app, and that Anthropic's plug-in launches earlier this year, Claude Design among them, fed a prolonged selloff in software shares.

One app now, and the rollout started on September 16, 2026

The merge is confirmed: Claude Chat and Claude Cowork are one experience, stated by Anthropic and reported by TechCrunch, with the rollout beginning on September 16, 2026. According to Anthropic, it arrives for Pro and Max users over the next few weeks, so the change may not have reached your account yet.

The same release brings Claude Docs and Claude Slides, two tools you open from the chat. Claude Design joins them: according to Anthropic it now works inside conversations. Anthropic's own launch notes describe Design as starting out a separate Anthropic Labs product in research preview, running on Claude Opus 4.7 and rolling out gradually to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers.

Docs is the better documented of the two. According to Axios, Claude can draft sections, ask questions, comment on editorial choices and revise a document, while colleagues work in the same file at the same time. Documents start private; the owner can share them with specific people or a whole organisation, and you can export to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

Slides is named alongside them, reachable from the unified chat, with no mechanism spelled out in the notes. Design brings its own plumbing: per Anthropic, onboarding has Claude read a team's codebase and design files to build a design system, after which every project uses that team's colours, typography and components. Imports can come from a prompt, images, DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files or a codebase, and a finished design can be handed to Claude Code as a packaged bundle.

In Anthropic's platform documentation, the default setting, tool_choice auto, has Claude decide on each turn whether to call a tool or answer directly, calling one when the request maps to that tool's described capability.

How does Cowork do multi-step work?

Per DEV Community, you describe an outcome instead of writing one prompt: Claude shows you a plan, waits for your approval, and works through each step, looping you in before anything significant. You can point it at work through connectors for apps like Slack, at the live web through Chrome, or let it operate an app directly, the way a person would.

Think of it as briefing a contractor rather than dictating a sentence. You say what the finished thing should look like, they come back with a plan, and you sign off before anyone knocks a wall down.

Before the merge, according to DEV Community, Cowork lived in the Claude desktop app and was available on all paid plans: Pro at 17 to 20 dollars a month, Max 5x at 100 dollars and Max 20x at 200 dollars. The same account notes that Cowork burns through usage limits much faster than Chat, because it does far more under the hood.

The notes name Pro and Max and no one else; Team and Enterprise, which according to Anthropic could reach Claude Design back when it was a standalone research preview, are not mentioned, and no finish date is given for the rollout. In our view the open question here is cost rather than features, since DEV Community reported that Cowork eats usage limits much faster than Chat, and a chat window that now hands you Docs, Slides and Design makes that heavier mode easier to start without deciding to.

After the Pro and Max window

Anthropic puts no end date on the few weeks, so the first checkpoint sits in the app itself: whether the Claude desktop client, where Cowork lived before the merge according to DEV Community, keeps it as its own destination once the chat window does the same work. The second is Docs, whose export list today runs to Google Docs and Microsoft Word per Axios, and whether the merged chat widens it.
