Authors and publishers fight over settlement shares
The New York Times reports that authors are wrangling with their publishers over how money from Anthropic’s $1.5 billion copyright settlement gets divided, which decides what individual writers actually collect. A federal judge approved the settlement over books used to train Claude.
Writer Beware reported on September 4 that authors have been getting notices about disputed publisher claims and allocation summaries, with writers saying publishers claimed incorrect shares of their allocations. TechCrunch describes around half a million writers as eligible for a payday of at least $3,000.
