The New York Times reports that the payout stage of Anthropic's book copyright settlement has turned into a fight between writers and their publishers over who holds the claim. A US judge approved the $1.5 billion deal over books used to train Claude in July, and the claims process is running now.

Around half a million writers were reported eligible for a payday of at least $3,000, according to TechCrunch. Writer Beware reported on September 4 that authors getting claim notices are disputing publishers' assertions over their allocations.
