Claude sends Gmail replies and manages Drive files
Claude News
anthropicAnthropic has extended Claude's Google connectors to outbound actions: a request to answer an email thread now ends with the message drafted and sent from the user's Gmail account. The update, published in a post on Threads, also covers file management in Google Drive.
At a glance
- Approval remains with the user: according to Anthropic's Claude site, Claude asks for confirmation before an email goes out by default, and the point at which that confirmation is required can be changed.
- Both connectors are switched on from the connectors menu, and the update is limited to paid plans, which leaves free accounts without the Gmail and Drive actions.
- Testing Catalog reports that the update to the Google connectors brings new UI components and that the mail and file actions run directly from the chat.
Write access changes the risk profile of a connector. Reading a mailbox is recoverable, sending from it is not, and the configurable approval step appears to be the whole of the answer to that asymmetry. The direction reads as a push toward the last step of routine work, the point at which an assistant that already holds the context has so far stopped short of taking an action that leaves the chat.
Asking Claude to answer a thread produces both the draft and the send, so the composition step stays inside the chat rather than moving back to Gmail. According to Anthropic's Claude site, the Gmail connector covers replying, forwarding and sending.
Retrieval runs through the same connection: according to Anthropic's Claude site, Claude searches and reads mail using natural-language queries, so finding a thread and answering it belong to a single exchange. The same site lists the Google Workspace connectors on Claude and on Claude Desktop.
Approval works as a setting rather than a fixed gate. Claude asks for approval before an email is sent by default, according to Anthropic's Claude site, and the announcement leaves the point at which that confirmation is required in the hands of the user.
Google Drive file management is the second half of the update, announced together with the mail actions. Testing Catalog reports that the Google connectors were updated with new UI components, and that sending mail and managing Drive files run directly from the chat.
Which Drive actions stay unnamed
The announcement does not specify which file operations count as management in Google Drive, and it names no other Google Workspace applications. Availability is given only as all paid plans, with no rollout schedule, no regional staging and no indication of whether the write actions will reach free accounts for either connector.
