Anthropic’s Q3 brought $17B in revenue and an operating loss

An amended S-1 that Anthropic filed with the SEC on Monday puts third-quarter revenue at $17 billion, up about 47% from Q2, after about 144% growth the quarter before. The profit the Financial Times reported holds only on an adjusted basis, without stock-based pay and charitable charges: on the operating line, the filing shows a $567 million loss.
Anthropic blames the loss mainly on compute bought under short-term commitments, which it says “currently costs significantly more” than capacity from its multi-year deals. That pricier compute also cut the adjusted operating margin to 15% from 19% in the second quarter.

Nearly $70 billion of Anthropic’s compute bills come due in the next 12 months, out of about $895.4 billion in commitments its amended IPO filing lists through 2045. Do you lock in multiyear cloud or compute deals, or pay as you go?
