Amodei: distillation could cut China's lag to a few months

Dario Amodei says industrial-scale distillation gives China models noticeably better than what its chip fleet alone would support, and could narrow the gap with the US frontier to a matter of months. What it doesn't do, he argues, is deliver capabilities equal to or beyond American models. His prescription: targeted measures aimed at the distillation operations themselves, not a blanket ban on open weights as a category.

He also breaks with part of the industry's open letter. The claim that open weights necessarily make it easier to build defenses is, in his view, unproven. In biology he sees the asymmetry running the other way: sufficiently capable models could quickly turn pandemic-class viruses into weapons using widely available materials, while defense takes years at best, as it did with Operation Warp Speed.
