Anthropic updates safety policy amid valuation surge

In February 2026, Anthropic published the third version of its Responsible Scaling Policy, dropping the binding commitment to pause model development if capabilities outpace safety measures. The prior version's only binding requirement gave way to Frontier Safety Roadmaps, where Anthropic sets its own targets.
Chief Scientist Jared Kaplan said the company dropped the one-sided commitment as competitors continue to accelerate. He noted a pause by one company does not make the world safer if other market participants do not follow.
When the policy debuted in 2023, Anthropic's valuation was $4 billion. By February 2026, that figure reached $380 billion. The company filed for an IPO on June 1.
