Apple opens Foundation Models to third-party LLMs
Apple updated the Foundation Models framework to natively support third-party language models, including Claude and Gemini. Developers can now integrate these models via Swift packages using a unified LanguageModel protocol.
The update also brings the Private Cloud Compute Language Model with a 32,000-token context window and deep reasoning capabilities. The framework is now open-source, allowing it to run on Linux servers.
For visual data, tools like BarcodeReader and OCR have been added, and for local search, integration with Spotlight is available. The new Dynamic Profiles API enables apps to automatically switch between different models and settings within a single session.
