Blender addon makes Claude twice as efficient with nodes

A Blender addon shown on Hacker News on October 25 gives Claude a typed Python function for every node in Geometry Nodes and Shader Nodes. Its author says that with it, Opus built node trees for the same prompt in at least half the time and with at least half the tokens. The addon, Geometry Script on GitHub, is meant to run alongside the Blender MCP, and those figures come from the author’s own tests alone.

The savings come from fewer wrong guesses. An agent driving Blender without the addon has to guess what each node, input and output is called. Geometry Script generates a function and related types for every node instead. The author says that because the API forces Opus to build correct trees, it has to backtrack less to fix mistakes, and that is where the time and tokens go. The functions are generated from Blender itself, so names, inputs, outputs and enum values match the version you have installed and an editor can complete them. The project’s documentation adds that errors say what to change. The author has asked users to report how it works for them.

Shader node groups, materials, worlds and compositor node groups can be scripted the same way, and the documentation lists coverage of repeat, simulation, for-each and closure zones. Scripts are converted directly into node trees, so someone who doesn’t script can still tweak the result in Blender.

Geometry Script is a Blender extension and requires Blender 5.2 or newer. Its node modules are generated from Blender and aren’t checked into the repository; loading the add-on from a checkout generates them with that Blender. The addon is also listed on Superhive (formerly Blender Market), whose page says it can be had free from GitHub.

Agents are a late use. The author first wrote the addon four years ago to build Geometry Nodes with code, and only recently “discovered that coding agents love it.” The README gives the original reason: at a certain point Geometry Node trees become unmanageably large, and creating them in Python makes large, complex trees quicker to edit and reorganize.

For Claude Code users, the repository doubles as a plugin marketplace with a skill for building node trees with Geometry Script, plus helper functions the agent uses to look up a node’s function signature. The skill runs scripts through Blender’s MCP server when it’s connected, or in background Blender otherwise.
