Reddit user says Max 20x and 5x share one monthly cap

A Claude Max subscriber who moved from the 5x plan ($100 a month) to 20x ($200) wrote on Reddit on October 23 that both tiers have the same monthly usage cap. He says the multiplier only changes the 5-hour session limit, and a heavy user hits that limit on either plan.

He upgraded to finish a big project this month, then ran out of usage faster than ever. Looking for an explanation in the subreddit, he found other users who had already reached the same conclusion. He posted screenshots of the checkout flow for both plans and says neither mentions that the session limit is all the extra $100 buys. “Any reasonable person would assume that the checkout flow is talking about total usage, not the rate of usage,” he wrote, calling it “a dark pattern at BEST and false advertising at WORST.”

His proposed response is to open Help chats, ask for a real person, post about it on social media and skip the 20x tier. “Just get two 5x plans if you need more usage,” he wrote. He adds that it doesn’t matter to him that OpenAI does the same thing, because Anthropic “can’t brand themselves as the ‘ethical AI’” and trick users when money changes hands.

Anthropic doesn’t state exact usage limits for its plans, The Register noted in March. Pro promises “at least five times the usage per session compared to our free service,” and the Standard Team plan “1.25x more usage per session than the Pro plan.” That leaves developers little way to know their limits other than watching the dashboard that shows how much quota they have consumed.

Claude Code limits have drawn complaints before. In March, Anthropic acknowledged that “people are hitting usage limits in Claude Code way faster than expected,” and one developer said “I used up Max 5 in 1 hour of working, before I could work 8 hours,” per The Register. Anthropic also said it was reducing quotas during peak hours, a change engineer Thariq Shihipar said would affect around 7 percent of users.
