Anthropic hires former California Supreme Court justice Tino Cuéllar

Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar is joining Anthropic as Chief Global Affairs Officer, a new role covering policy, international engagement, and government relations. He recently stepped down as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a research organization whose staff work in 20 countries.

Before Carnegie, Cuéllar sat on the California Supreme Court, where he heard cases on technology and privacy, international agreements, and separation of powers. At Stanford he ran the Freeman Spogli Institute and the Cyber Initiative.

He became a trustee of Anthropic's oversight trust in January 2026 and gave up the seat to take the company job. The trust will pick a successor through its usual process.
