Anthropic is hiring a research engineer to protect democratic institutions from AI

Last week, Anthropic opened a Research Engineer role within its Rule of Law team. The objective is to study how increasingly powerful AI systems might impact courts, elections, and other democratic institutions, and to develop safeguards.
The role sits within the new Anthropic Institute, which analyzes the company's AI impact on the economy and institutions from inside the lab, utilizing internal data unavailable to external observers.
Work is divided into three areas: ensuring AI agents comply with the law through evaluations and fine-tuning, studying shifts in power structures, and applying AI to improve government services.
Requirements include deep learning expertise combined with knowledge of law, political science, or public administration, plus at least five years of experience. The salary range is $320,000 to $485,000 per year, with a hybrid work requirement in San Francisco or New York.
