Anthropic's $16.8B quarter tops its whole 2025 revenue

5 min read

According to Bloomberg, Anthropic told prospective investors that its third quarter alone brought in $16.8 billion. That is more than three times the roughly $4.6 billion it made in all of 2025, and people familiar with the matter say the October 14 presentation also claimed the quarter was profitable on an adjusted basis.

At a glance

  • Anthropic made the pitch at its San Francisco headquarters as it gets ready for formal IPO marketing, which could start as soon as the week of November 9, with trading before Thanksgiving.
  • For scale, 2025 revenue was roughly $4.6 billion, up from $386 million in 2024, while the net loss reached almost $42 billion and the operating loss came to more than $8 billion.
  • The quarterly profit is an adjusted figure, and what it leaves out was not disclosed. The people familiar with the matter also say the IPO timeline could still shift before the debut.

If you have not been following, here is the funding history. According to Sacra, Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G on February 12, 2026 at $380 billion post-money. A $65 billion Series H followed on May 28, 2026 at $965 billion post-money, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. Axis Intelligence reports a confidential S-1 filing on June 1, 2026, with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase reportedly as lead underwriters.

A $16.8 billion quarter follows a 2025 net loss of almost $42 billion

The $16.8 billion covers the third quarter alone, and Anthropic paired it with a claim of adjusted profitability for the same period. The Financial Times reported some of the figures earlier on October 14, before Bloomberg's account of the investor presentation came out.

Last year's numbers make the comparison stark. Bloomberg News reported in August that Anthropic's 2025 net loss was almost $42 billion, roughly five times the approximately $8.3 billion it lost the year before. Documents seen by Bloomberg News put 2025 revenue at roughly $4.6 billion, up from $386 million in 2024, with an operating loss that grew to more than $8 billion.

Some investors put a fair valuation at $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion before the meeting

Before the presentation, some investors said a fair valuation for Anthropic would fall somewhere between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion. For comparison, the Series H in May valued the company at $965 billion post-money. Bloomberg News has reported that Anthropic expects its IPO to match or beat the size of SpaceX's.

The schedule is tight. Formal marketing could begin as soon as the week of November 9, which would put the first trades before Thanksgiving, and the debut is expected no later than the end of the year. The people familiar with the matter said deliberations are ongoing. Investors' reactions to this update will be critical to the IPO process.

Meta says Muse Wonder matches Claude at coding, finance and legal work

Anthropic is not pitching to investors in a quiet market. OpenAI is neck and neck with it in the race for a higher valuation, and Meta Platforms has released Muse Wonder, a model Meta calls a big leap over its predecessors. Meta says Muse Wonder is on par with ChatGPT and Claude at coding and at working through financial or legal questions.

Anthropic and OpenAI are also at the center of growing public scrutiny over AI safety after a string of high-profile hacking incidents by rogue agents, which has raised concern about the effect on Anthropic's IPO. New listings elsewhere keep slipping. Data centre operator AirTrunk delayed its Singapore REIT offering until 2027, days after a planned IPO for Australian data centre company Firmus collapsed.

More than 1,000 customers were spending over $1 million a year by April 2026

The quarter sits on top of fast enterprise growth. As of April 2026, more than 1,000 customers were spending over $1 million a year, double the 500-plus of under two months earlier, and eight of the Fortune 10 are Claude customers. Claude Code hit $1 billion in annualized revenue by November 2025 and $2.5 billion in February 2026.

Run-rate estimates point the same way. Sacra estimated annualized revenue at $65 billion in July 2026, and GetLatka cites Fortune for $65 billion in August. Both are annualized estimates rather than recognized quarterly revenue, so they do not line up directly with the $16.8 billion.

How does Anthropic count that $16.8 billion?

According to Sacra, revenue comes mainly from pay-per-token API usage. Sales through cloud resellers such as AWS, Google and Microsoft are reported on a gross basis: the end customer's full spend counts as revenue, and the partner's payout is booked as an expense. Picture a travel agent that reports the whole ticket price as sales, even though part of it goes straight to the airline.

Costs are the other half of the picture. Axis Intelligence, citing the WSJ and Let's Data Science, puts Anthropic's Q1 2026 compute cost at 56 cents per revenue dollar, a figure from two quarters before the one now being pitched.

What the adjusted profit excludes was not disclosed, and Anthropic's 2025 shows how much the choice of line matters: an operating loss of more than $8 billion next to a net loss of almost $42 billion. In our view, the gross reporting Sacra describes makes $16.8 billion hard to set against peers that report net, so the margin in an eventual prospectus will likely say more than the top line.

What the November 9 window settles If formal marketing starts the week of November 9 as reported, trading would begin before Thanksgiving, with year-end as the latest expected debut. The people familiar with the matter say the timeline could still move. It is not yet known whether investors will accept the $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion range some of them suggested before the meeting, and no offering size or share price has been given.
