A November IPO buys Anthropic time to show Q3 numbers

Claude News

Anthropic's advisers see one useful thing in a month of delay: a closed quarter and the financials that come with it. The company has pushed its planned initial public offering from October to November, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

At a glance

  • The shift to a November offering was decided before public discourse on AI safety hit a fever pitch last week, according to some people familiar with the timing.
  • Some of Anthropic's advisers say the extra month leaves room to share third-quarter financials, numbers they expect to show a strong competitive position even after OpenAI launched Astra in September.
  • The timing, the rationale and the earlier October date all come from people familiar with the matter, with no valuation, no filing date and no financial figures attached to any of it.

October was where investors had it, and the offering was expected then to be a record-breaking one, according to people familiar with the matter. Anthropic plans to meet prospective investors in the coming days. All of this is happening while leaders of the biggest companies in the AI race call publicly for a slowdown in the development of the technology, the Journal reports.

The rationale attributed to the company's side is narrow and specific. Some of Anthropic's advisers say waiting until November gives the startup time to share third-quarter financials that show a strong competitive position, even after rival OpenAI launched its newest model, Astra, in September. That is the only reasoning the reporting offers for the new date.

A quarter's numbers do not exist until the quarter has closed and been added up, and the third quarter closes with September. That is the mechanical difference between the two dates: an October pitch leans on older figures, a November one can carry the September quarter, the same quarter in which OpenAI shipped Astra. It is the difference between sending out your portfolio the week before your big project lands and the week after.

The whole account rests on people familiar with the matter, and the phrase doing the most work in it is "strong competitive position", which arrives with no revenue, no growth rate and no margin behind it. In our view the interesting part is how short the delay is, one month bought to put a single quarter's accounts in front of buyers, which reads as confidence about what that quarter holds.

When the Q3 numbers surface The near-term marker is the investor meetings, which Anthropic plans to hold in the coming days. After that, watch for the third-quarter financials the advisers are counting on; the reporting does not say whether they will be published, shown privately or land in a filing. No specific November date has been given, and no valuation has been reported. If the month slips again, the quarter argument is the thing to test it against.
