Judge signs off on Anthropic's $1.5 billion copyright settlement
Reuters reports that a federal judge approved Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement on July 20, resolving a copyright case brought in the Northern District of California. The authors accused the company of training Claude on pirated books.
Per the Associated Press, the deal covers nearly half a million books said to have been downloaded illegally, with authors and publishers getting about $3,000 for each one.
Judge William Alsup gave the settlement preliminary approval in September 2025, then rejected it over concerns about attorneys' fees. Final approval came July 20.
