MCP goes stateless in its biggest update yet
The final Model Context Protocol spec landed on July 28, the largest revision since the protocol shipped. The headline change: MCP is now stateless, with no state carried between requests. That kills the need for sticky sessions and shared state stores, so servers can sit behind an ordinary round-robin load balancer.
Also in the spec: MCP Apps renders server-side interfaces inside an isolated frame, Tasks handles long-running and asynchronous operations, and Enterprise Managed Auth centralizes access control for MCP servers through a corporate identity provider. Authorization gets tightened, and there's now a formal deprecation policy.
Extensions are now a defined path for evolving the protocol. Anthropic released MCP twenty months ago, per VentureBeat.
