Legion LegalTech sues US government over Fable 5 and Mythos 5 shutdown
San Jose-based Legion LegalTech filed a lawsuit in Washington federal court on Tuesday. The firm is seeking to overturn a Department of Commerce directive that forced Anthropic to disable its two most powerful models for all global users two weeks ago.
The Bureau of Industry and Security directive, issued June 12, banned access for any foreign nationals both inside and outside the US. Unable to verify citizenship in real time, Anthropic disabled both models for all customers that same day.
Legion builds legal software using Anthropic models, and a portion of its engineering team consists of Canadian citizens working from Canada. The lawsuit describes the damage to the company as immediate, irreparable, and existential. Anthropic is not a party to the case, and the models remain offline.
