Anthropic talks with White House over Fable 5 stall
The Trump administration wrapped up another round of talks with Anthropic without lifting export restrictions on the Fable 5 model. Officials argue current protections can be circumvented by accessing the more powerful Mythos model.
The discussions included Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Anthropic representatives. The company maintains that government concerns are overblown. A group of researchers sent an open letter saying such measures cut off defenders from audit tools.
The situation escalated after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The NSA confirmed that restrictions could be lifted, leading to the export controls. The model remains unavailable to users.
