Pop-out panes surface in the Claude Code desktop app

Any pane in the Claude Code desktop app can be pulled out of the main layout and run as its own window, with the diff view or the terminal moved onto a second screen while the session continues in the original window. The feature was described in a post on X, which adds that a detached pane can be docked back at any point.

It also narrows the gap between the desktop app and the terminal-plus-tmux setups many Claude Code users already run, where window placement has always been the operating system's job rather than the application's.

The post on X frames the behaviour as covering any pane rather than a fixed pair, with the diff view and the terminal named only as examples of what can be moved out. The main window keeps running its session while a pane sits on another screen.

Layout options are not limited to detached windows. The same post says sessions can be arranged side-by-side or stacked, and Anthropic's documentation separately describes a drag-and-drop pane layout inside the desktop app, along with an integrated terminal and the ability to run sessions in parallel.

The pop-out layout is not described in Anthropic's documentation, which covers panes moved inside the app window. Requests on GitHub for OS-level detachable windows in Claude Code were still open as of August 2026, a feature request separate from the in-app arrangement of panes.
