Claude Code versions and changes

Which version is the latest and what is new in it

Updated 21 October 2026360 stories

The latest Claude Code release is version 2.1.305, published October 20, 2026. It fixes requests on Vertex, Bedrock and other providers. Starting with 2.1.304, every request failed there when the endpoint or a gateway rejected tool search. Claude Code now retries without tool search, and that includes gateways that disallow ToolSearch or leave it out of --tools.

The same release adds sandbox.allowNestedUserNamespaces. It lets sandboxed Linux commands create user namespaces for Chromium or rootless podman, which also gets those commands around the sandbox’s file protections. With CLAUDE_CODE_RETRY_WATCHDOG_USAGE_LIMIT_RECHECK_MS, unattended retry mode can notice when a usage limit is lifted before its reset. Watch the allowedMcpServers change: managed-mcp.json stdio servers that use ${VAR} only in env now load even when your allowlist left them out, and you need deniedMcpServers to keep them off.

On Pro and Max plans, version 2.1.304 asks before you resume an inactive conversation, because a resume can use a noticeable share of your 5-hour usage limit. It also stops claude --worktree from removing the worktree and its branch at exit without asking, which could lose commits. Version 2.1.299 started compacting idle conversations of 200K+ tokens before their one-hour prompt cache expires, and 2.1.302 added an off switch for that in /config. Code Review is now generally available on Claude Team and Enterprise plans, and Anthropic says most reviews finish in 6-10 minutes.

What is the latest version of Claude Code?

Version 2.1.305, published October 20, 2026. It fixes failed requests on Vertex, Bedrock and other providers and adds the sandbox.allowNestedUserNamespaces setting.

Why did Claude Code requests fail on Bedrock or Vertex after 2.1.304?

Starting with 2.1.304, every request failed on Vertex, Bedrock and other providers when the endpoint or a gateway rejected tool search. Version 2.1.305 retries without tool search, including behind gateways that disallow ToolSearch or leave it out of --tools.

How do I turn off idle compaction in Claude Code?

Since version 2.1.302, /config has an Idle compaction row that turns it off or back on. You can also set “idleCompaction”: false in settings.json, or change the 200K-token minimum with CLAUDE_CODE_IDLE_COMPACT_MIN_TOKENS. Both of those settings need v2.1.290 or later.

Which models does Claude Code use by default?

Opus 5.5 took the default seat in Claude Code. On the Anthropic API, the default Sonnet is Claude Sonnet 5.5 as of 2.1.284, and the default Haiku is Claude Haiku 5.5 as of 2.1.293, with a 1M context window.

Who can use Claude Code Review and how fast is it?

Code Review is generally available on Claude Team and Enterprise plans. Anthropic says most reviews finish in 6-10 minutes, about 3x faster than during the preview. Admins choose Quick, Standard or Deep for each repository.
